A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday morning at the Chunar railway station in Mirzapur, resulting in the deaths of at least six pilgrims. The incident took place around 9:30 AM on platform number 3 when the Kalka Mail Express was passing through at high speed.
According to reports, the pilgrims had arrived from Chopan and were crossing the tracks to reach platform number 3 after disembarking from a train that had stopped at platform number 4. They were struck by the fast-moving Kalka Bandhu train, with witnesses stating that the event unfolded so quickly that no one had a chance to react.
These pilgrims were en route to Varanasi for the auspicious bathing ritual of Kartik Purnima. Following the accident, chaos erupted at the station. Railway officials, the Government Railway Police (GRP), and local police quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound sorrow over the incident and instructed officials to initiate immediate rescue and relief operations. He announced a compensation of two lakh rupees for the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway, the pilgrims attempted to cross the tracks directly without using the foot overbridge, which led to this unfortunate incident. Additional teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP have been deployed at the site. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and measures are being considered to prevent such accidents in the future.
Importantly, despite this tragedy, train services at Chunar Junction continue to operate smoothly. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and await further updates.
